Asterisk PBX

21.10.2-0004

Free native DSM package: Asterisk 21 with FreePBX 17 — extensions, SIP trunks, IVR, voicemail, music on hold, call history and recordings, managed in a DSM window. No Docker.

Asterisk and FreePBX as a native DSM app: phones and softphones, SIP trunks to any provider, voice menus, voicemail and call history — in one window, on hardware you already own.

The engine is a Debian 12 userland with Asterisk, FreePBX, MariaDB and Apache, run by systemd on the NAS itself. It uses the NAS's own network: no NAT and no port mapping in front of SIP and voice.

Phones, softphones, desk sets

PJSIP extensions with passwords, caller ID, call waiting, follow-up when busy or offline, several devices per number and live online state.

What’s new

Version 21.10.2-0004, 29 October 2026

  • First release: Asterisk 21.10.2 and FreePBX 17 as a native DSM app, without Docker.

Installation

  1. 1

    Add the package source

Package Center → Settings → Package Sources → Add, with the address below. The package appears under Community.

    https://apps.ibcsc.be/synology
  2. 2

    Install Asterisk PBX

Click Install. Package Center checks that SIP port 5060 is free (stop an Asterisk or FreePBX container first).

  3. 3

    Activate and connect

Open Asterisk PBX from the main menu and click “Activate now…”. The first start installs FreePBX in a few minutes; then add a trunk and your extensions.

Questions and answers

Is it free?

Yes. Asterisk and FreePBX are open source (GPL); the package and the DSM app are free. You only pay your SIP provider for calls.

Which NAS?

Synology with an Intel or AMD processor (x86_64) on DSM 7.2 or later, 2 GB RAM or more. The engine takes about 2.5 GB on the volume.

I run FreePBX in Docker. Can I move?

Yes. Make a backup in FreePBX's Backup & Restore module, stop the containers, install the package and restore it in the FreePBX panel (Maintenance → Engine turns the panel on). The package refuses to install while another PBX holds port 5060.

Why does DSM ask for my password?

Asterisk, MariaDB and FreePBX need their own service accounts, which only root can start. The app creates a one-time root task in DSM's Task Scheduler; DSM confirms it with your password and the task is deleted right away.

Do I need port forwarding?

For phones and providers outside your LAN, forward SIP 5060 and the RTP range (10000–20000 by default, adjustable) to the NAS. Phones in the LAN need nothing.

Is the FreePBX panel still there?

Yes, off by default. Turn it on for the LAN in Maintenance → Engine for modules such as queues, time conditions or the IVR builder.

How do I check the downloaded file?

In Terminal, run the command below and compare the result with the SHA-256 fingerprint on the right. If a single character differs, do not open the file and write to us.
